About
Mark Zall is a watercolor painter who works in a contemporary representational style. He loves feeling compelled to draw and paint. Mark’s work is influenced by the ocean, nature, structure, waves and flow. A thalassophile, he is passionate about the unpredictable movement of water and color on paper that has resonance with the ocean. This water medium inspires him and much of his subject matter is ocean based. His paintings reflect his fascination with nature’s beauty, the human form and the influence of people on the on the landscape.
Informed by his past career as an architect; line, form and color are an armature that gives structure to Mark’s work. The liquid waves and washes of watercolor communicate light, shade and shadow that translate to the light waves of his finished work. Flow is an intrinsic aspect of watercolor, but it is also the mental state needed for Mark to create his works of art. There is a deep mental concentration and absorption in the act of painting, the sense of time is altered, he is energized and totally focused in the moment. For Mark, a simple walk is filled with possible paintings, a watercolor sketchbook is a constant companion and a large blank sheet of paper is joyful potential.
Mark Zall lives in Sonoma, California.
